The aim of this paper was to report a challenging case of an implant-supported oral rehabilitation, for a totally edentulous maxilla with severe horizontal atrophy and partial mandibular edentulism, having antero-posterior skeletal discrepancy and excessive buccal projection of the lower incisors. For this, an integrated multidisciplinary treatment was performed around several specialties. First, two dental implants were placed at the mandibular posterior region to serve as absolute anchorage in the orthodontic therapy to decompensate the incisors. Next, zygoma implants were placed with a provisional prosthesis under immediate loading in the output setting, but no corrections were provided for the antero-posterior deficiency. After 30 days, the patient received general anesthesia, and the mandibular retrusion surgery was made. Finally, after 120 days, the definitive maxillary prosthesis was delivered. A significative functional and esthetic improvement was observed. Also, the maintenance of these results was observed after the 12-month follow-up period.
Aim: this review aimed to evaluate the association between halitosis and systemic disorders as well as the methods for identifying this condition. Material and methods: a search in PubMed database was performed using the following strategy: "halitosis AND (cause OR casualty OR aetiology)", from 2007 to 2017, after title analysis, summary, full-text availability and relevance. Results: twenty-three studies were selected, including research articles, case reports and letters to the reader. The articles show papers evaluated with the main diagnostic methods: organoleptic, portable sulfide monitor and gas chromatography. Conclusion: halitosis can be associated with systemic conditions, which can help to correct diagnosis and early treatment, restoring patient's quality of life and tranquillity in social interactions.
